Project story

Lighting bridges past and present

Set within Kuala Lumpur’s historic Old Market Square, Medan Pasar transforms the upper floor of a heritage shophouse into an intimate venue for private dining, live music, performances and talks. Studio Illumine’s lighting balances this flexibility with respect for the building’s Malaysian, Moorish and European architectural influences.

Inside, the atmosphere recalls a 1930s jazz lounge. Indirect lighting follows the timber roof, while focused track lights, wall sconces and concealed illumination around the bar and mirrors bring depth to dark timber, polished brass, exposed brick and Art Deco-inspired furnishings.

Project insight

A new life for heritage

For heritage spaces to remain relevant, they need to be more than preserved. Through lighting, old spaces can be reactivated — creating new emotional, cultural, and commercial value.
